A Farm Stay in County Wexford, Ireland
During our travels through Ireland, we spent time in the beautiful countryside of County Wexford, staying at a charming farm stay tucked down a long winding driveway surrounded by rolling green fields.
At the end of the drive sat the most beautiful old stone horse stable that had been carefully restored and transformed into a cozy Airbnb. The building held so much history, yet the space felt warm and welcoming — the perfect place to experience rural Irish farm life.
One of the best parts of staying on a farm is getting to meet the people who live and work there. That morning, we spent time with our hosts learning about their small sheep operation and walking their fields together.
The countryside in Wexford feels timeless. As we walked through the paddocks, we passed the old stone walls that have separated fields for generations. These walls, carefully built by hand long ago, still shape the landscape today.
A highlight of the morning was feeding the bottle lambs. They eagerly ran across the field as soon as they saw the bottles, and it was impossible not to smile watching them bounce around the grass. Along with their sheep, the farm is also home to pigs and two incredibly friendly donkeys that happily greeted us along the way.
Like many farmers around the world — including many in the United States — our hosts also work off-farm jobs because the farm alone cannot fully sustain their family. It’s a reminder that farming is often a true labor of love.
One of the things I appreciate most when traveling is meeting farmers in other parts of the world. Even though we may farm in different climates, raise different animals, or operate at different scales, there is always a shared understanding.
There’s something special about the connection between farmers. We may arrive as strangers, but we quickly find common ground through the work we do and the life we live.
No matter where you are in the world, farmers share the same respect for the land, the animals, and the responsibility of caring for both.
This farm stay in County Wexford reminded me how agriculture connects people across countries and cultures — and how those connections can turn a simple overnight stay into a meaningful experience.
Experiences like this are exactly why we started offering farm stays at Feathered Acres Learning Farm + Inn in Minnesota. Staying on a working farm gives people something you simply can’t find in a hotel — a real connection to the land, the animals, and the people who care for them every day. When visitors walk the fields, meet the animals, and hear the stories behind a farm, agriculture becomes real in a way it never could from a grocery store shelf. Our visit to this farm in County Wexford reminded me that farm stays are more than just a place to sleep — they are an opportunity to learn, connect, and build understanding between farmers and the communities we feed. No matter where you are in the world, opening the farm gate and welcoming people in is one of the most powerful ways we can share agriculture. mission.
